Should I Use An Interlocking Golf Grip?

I am wondering about my golf grip. I am a 19 handicap and I would like to know which golf grip I should use. I have played for a long time and have always used an interlocking golf grip. Is this grip ok to hold the golf club?

Many successful players have used the interlocking golf grip including Jack Nicklaus! First your grip must be comfortable to you. I am going to assume that is the case because you have used it for a long time. Read the article Clap For Your Golf Grip to learn more about how to hold a golf club.

Do You Push Or Pull The Club Shaft?

My boss and I were talking golf the other day. We were discussing whether you should pull or push the club on the downswing. Which full swing theory is correct?

You definitely should PULL the golf club on the downswing. Here is the analogy: Take a little red wagon. Do you have more control if you push the handle in front of you or pull the handle behind you? Can you go faster if you push the handle in front of you or pull the handle behind you? Of course the answer is that you have more control and can go faster if you are pulling the wagon behind you. As you pull the golf club on the downswing, you will have greater control and will be able to create more speed in your full swing.

Jim McLean - Eight Step Swing

I have been reading books from Jim McLean. What is your take on his eight step swing theory?

I like what Jim McLean has to say. One reason is that teaches you to go in to zones as opposed to VERY specific positions. Not all of us are built the same way thus, it gives everyone the freedom to use their swing and not a "canned" golf swing. As I have watched him many times on TV as well as listening to different presentations that he has given, he seems to make it easy to understand.

How Should I Hold The Club?

I have just started playing golf and am 12 years old. I am pretty small for my age. How should I hold the club? Should I use the ten finger grip until I get bigger?

Yes you can!!! There is nothing wrong with the ten finger grip which is also known as the base ball grip. There still are some "grip laws" that you need to follow with any grip that you use. Read the article Clap For Your Golf Grip to make sure that you are properly using the ten finger grip. It is GREAT that you are playing golf now. Make sure you are spending time on your short game and your putting and you will enjoy the game for a long time. Keep asking questions here and Wireless Golf Coach will help you however we can!!!

Golf Instruction Books

Are there specific golf instruction books that you recommend for someone just learning how to play the game of golf?

There are many good golf instruction books for new golfers. Understand the quickest way to learn the game is to find a qualified PGA Professional and take some group or individual lessons. With that beinf said, first, we have suggestions of good golf lesson books listed on the right column of this blog. Second, understand that are many aspects of golf you can learn about. Examples go from the obvious such as the golf swing and/or golf instruction to golf course design and to the history of the game of golf. You can go to www.virtual golfswing.com and find many informative golf books about the previously mentioned subjects. For example you will find:

Stan Utley - The Art of Putting
Annika Sorenstam - Golf Annika's Way
Harvey Penick - The Little Red Book
