Does A One Handed Putting Drill Actually Work?

I am taking putting lessons from my local pro. I asked him for some putting drills to improve my stroke and he has me putting only with my right hand on the putter. Have you ever heard of this and do you make your students do this putting drill?

Yes I have and I do use this drill with my students!

Two reasons that I highly encourage my students to practice this one handed putting drill is that it gives them the exact feel of a proper putting motion and it develops a feel for the proper impact position for the putting stroke. This is a very simple thing to implement into your putting practice. Take your grip stance and posture and proceed to setup to stroke a putt from just two to three feet away from the hole.

Take your usual putting grip for a putting stroke. Assuming you are putting right handed, take your left hand off the putter leaving only your right hand on the putter in the hands usual position. Now you should have your putter in its regular position and the ball position placed in your usual position as well. The palm of your right hand should be equal to the direction of your putter face.

One reason for doing this golf putting drill from such a short distance as two or three feet is the backswing will not need very much movement. This should allow you to "feel" the putter head as it moves through the motion no matter how strong you are. The right wrist should keep the same angle throughout the stroke as at address and will not break AT ALL during this stroke from this distance.

With the correct grip pressure, you will be able to feel your putter load against the index finger of your right hand (again, for a right handed golfer). This load that is properly stored will be delivered to the golf ball during the forward stroke and will be lost just after impact. If you use a stripped range ball while doing this putting drill, place the stripe so it is parallel to the green surface and make your stroke under the stripe on the range ball. Your right hand should be ahead of the ball at impact. To finish the putting drill, hold your finish to a slow count of three. The putter head should be under your hands and not way out in front of your hands. Remember, your right wrist angle should not change.

How The TOMI Putting System Works

The Tomi Putting System is great putting training tool to use with your putting stroke. We are often asked how it works. Well, here is how it works. The Tomi's transmitter clip moves in perfect unison with the putter. The clip signals putter motions to the Tomi base unit. In turn, the base unit performs a sequence of algorithms and transmits results to the system pc. Then the Tomi's stroke analysis software converts the data into easy-to-understand and easy-to-explain charts and graphs right on your computer screen.

What does it mean in English? The TOMI putting training aid evaluates a putting stroke and with the use of the software, Marius will give you constructive feedback on how to improve your putting stroke. TOMI will see flawed stroke angles and motions that often go unnoticed, even to expert eyes. The Tomi will capture all of the following data and display it for you: Alignment at Impact, Stroke Path Direction, Backward Stroke Rotation, Forward Stroke Rotation, and Speed at Impact. The Tomi Putting System captures, records and gives real-time feedback on your stroke. You will feel like you are taking a personalized putting lesson from one of the world's top putting instructors, Marius Filmalter whenever you are using the unit.

The Tomi putting stroke training aid records the most critical parameters of your putting stroke in real-time. Tomi shows you what you're doing right as well as what you're doing wrong. Then tells you how to fix your problem by giving you the putting drills that you will need to become a great putter.

How Do I Get The Ball Closer On My First Putt?

I am learning the game and have just started to take golf lessons. I have not taken a putting lesson yet and I am having trouble getting my first putt close to the hole. Is there an easy way to get better at this?

First, we are very glad that you have Linked Up 2 Golf and have begun to play this great game. Second, do not hesitate to take a putting lesson. It will be money well spent, as more than half of your strokes will come from putting and the short game. Third, use the free golf instruction here as well as at Wireless Golf Coach.

Finally to fully answer your question, go to the practice putting green with three to five golf balls and your putter for an putting drill. At first, you will not need your putter but keep it close. Position yourself about twenty feet away from a hole and try to make the would be putt as flat as possible. What do i mean would be putt? We are first going to roll (not pitch) on the ground one ball towards the hole. Notice how far your arm moves. Your arm should not "wind up" behind you. To roll the ball the proper distance, your arm will move much shorter back than it will move on the way through. Note it is also important to hold your arm in its "finish position" until the golf ball stops rolling. Once comfortable with this simply pick up your putter and turn sideways to address you putt and "underhand the putter" just as you did to roll the ball to the hole.

You can also do this to the edge of the green if a hole is not available. You will see one of the tour players on a putting green looking like they are trying to underhand a ball to a hole. They are attempting to get the feel for the speed of the putt just as this putting drill allows you to do.

How Do I Improve My Distance Control With My Putting?

I have been playing golf for a long time and carry a 14 Handicap. I have not been able to get any lower than this the last couple of years. I am looking to improve my putting this season to lower my handicap. It seems that I am pretty good at starting the putt on line however I can not control the speed. Any suggestions?

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you are hitting each putt solidly. Read these articles and you should be well on your way to a lower handicap this year!

In addition, roll balls under-handed to holes on the practice putting green and hold the finish of your arm. Notice the shape that your arm takes, short back and longer through. This will be the same shape that your putting stroke should take. Remember, hold your finish!

What Do I Aim My Putts With?

I am confused. I have always putted with an open stance however, I have been pulling a lot of my putts lately. How do I know if I am lined up correctly with using an open stance?

The putting stroke is so short that you should use your shoulders to detemrine your alignment. My guess is that your feet have become too open and your shoulders have followed. With the short stroke of a putt, the hands and arms will have a tendency to follow the line of your shoulders. This should get your putts back on the correct line!!!

Where Do I Hit My Putts On The Putter Face?

I have a question about putting. How can I tell where I hit my putts on the putter face?

This is a good question. We are always talking about how to improve putting and here are a couple of simple ways to do it. You can buy a product called a strike-n-swipe. It is a reusable piece of impact tape. It is a really neat product.

Another way to do it is to sprinkle some baby powder on the golf ball before you make your putting stroke. You will be able to identify where the golf ball made contact with the putter face and easily wipe the excess powder off and putt again.

Help With My Putting

My putting is very inconsistent. I rarely hit two putts in a row that would go the same speed or distance. It seems like every single put is a new experience. Do you have some suggestions for some check points that I can use as I practice and as I play?

You can learn from every single putt that you hit no matter how bad or how good you feel the stroke was. The basic 5 questions that you should ask youself after every single to improve your putting are:

  1. Pay attention to the length of your backstroke and forward swing. Which is longer? Your backstroke should be shorted than your forward swing. This will allow you to accelerate on the forward swing. You MUST do this in order to be a good putter.
  2. How did the ball roll? Most good players draw a line on their golf ball to use to help align their putt. Some others use the logo of the golf ball to make sure they are on the correct line. If your are not doing one of these two things, you should be doing one or the other. When you stroke the putt, the line that you drew or the logo should roll in a straight line. The line should not wavier if a true roll has been put on the ball. On a putt that is not struck well, this indicator will roll to the right or to the left. If the line starts to wobble to the right or to the left then we did not hit the ball solid.
  3. Did the ball end up short or long of the hole? This is pretty self explainatory.
  4. Did I read the putt correctly? Hit or miss, in correctly reading the putting line, it should not be a surprise where your ball finishes.
  5. How was my finish position? I would like you to be able to hold your finish for a count of least three seconds? This usually means that many good things have happened during the stroke.

Putting Training Aids

I am looking for some advice on putting training aids. After recently reading "The Art of Putting" by Stan Utley, I have improved my putting by using more of an arc as opposed to my old straight back and straight through method. Are there any putting training aids that are specifically designed to help you with more of an arc stroke?

Yes! In fact I have two suggestions for you.

1. Putting Plane Alignment System by Eyeline Golf - The PUTTING PLANE ALIGNMENT SYSTEM is designed to give you instant feedback on all areas of putting alignment. THE PUTTING PLANE ALIGNMENT SYSTEM allows you to putt exactly as you would on the course. Just as if you had your coach standing with you, the mirrored surface allows you to check that your eyes are over the ball, shoulders are lined up, and putter face is square to your target. The inside rail, adjustable to fit any putter and is slanted at 72 degrees, allows the putter to come slightly inside as it moves back and up during the stroke. The PUTTING PLANE ALIGNMENT SYSTEM is lightweight yet tough and will fit conveniently into your golf bag.

2. The Putting Arc Deluxe - This putting training aid is a beautifully finished solid wood for indoor or outdoors use. The Putting Arc Deluxe is a revolutionary new putting training aid, which will guide you to a simple, repeatable, and understandable approach to putting. The Putting Arc Deluxe will assist you in developing a confidence while standing over your putter that is felt by only a small percentage of all golfers. This is a confidence to putt the golf ball exactly where you intend. The Putting Arc Deluxe works because it guides the putter head in pure planar rotation about an axis which passes through the golfers spine between the shoulders. This means that the hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders all stay connected throughout the putting stroke. The Putting Arc Deluxe golf putting aid has radial lines on its top. This important feature shows the correct clubface alignment at each point in the putting stroke. This alignment is just as important as the club head path! The Putting Arc Works Because
1. The Putting Arc Deluxe is based upon natural body movement which can be quickly learned and repeated. Results can be seen in several days and thousands of repetitions are not required to show improvement.
2. The clubhead travels in a perfect circle and the projection of this circle on the ground is an ellipse in the shape of the Putting Arc Deluxe.
3. The putter is always ?on plane? (the sweet-spot/spinal pivot plane). The intersection of this plane with the ground is a straight line, the ball/target line.
4. The club face is always square to the above plane and it is only square to the ball target line at the center line of the Putting Arc Deluxe. You are learning an inside to square to inside putting stroke.
5. In this perfect putting stroke, there is only one moving part. The hands, arms and shoulders rotate as one unit and no manipulation of the hands or arms is required to follow the correct path with a correct clubface because it happens automatically.

Improve Your Putting With A Credit Card

I am not sure if I am lining up putts correctly. Do you have suggestions that will help me make sure that I am lining up at the target?

We have a three suggestions for you.
  1. To check the alignment of your body, place a credit card in your mouth and then address the putt. Now make sure that your credit card is on the same line as your target line.

  2. To check the alignment of your putter face, place your credit card on the green and aim it at the hole length-wise. Place the ball on the credit card. Address your putt and notice if you have any descrepancies between the credit card and the putter face.

  3. To check your putting stroke, place a golf ball two feet away from the hole. Stroke putts from this distance. Although you will make the majority of these short putts, you will be able to tell where you are starting your putts. This putting drill, simple as it is, will build amazing confidence as well.

Putting Different Speeds

Why does it seem that every single putt I hit is different than the putt before? What can I do to change this?

Whether stroking a putt on the practice green or on the golf course, you can learn from every single putt that you hit. Here are the 5 questions you should ask after every putt that you stroke so you can putt better.

Which is longer, your backstroke or forward stroke? As you need to be accelerating during your forward stroke, it is importnat that your backstroke is shorter than your forward stroke.

Did the ball roll true? Today, almost everyone lines up thier putts with a line or a logo on their golf ball. If your are not doing this you should be doing this. Once aligned, the line should roll in a straight line. This tells us that a true roll has been put on the ball. If the line starts to wobble to the right or left then we did not hit the ball solid.

Did the ball end up short or long of the hole?

Did I read the putt correctly? If you read the putt correctly , it should not be a surprise where the ball ends up.

Did I hold my finish for at least three seconds? If you can do this then typically many things have gone well during the putting stroke and you will putt better.

Cross-Handed Putting

Looking at the tour players there are many different ways to putt. What are the advantages of cross-handed putting?

Good Question! Here are a few advantages of cros-handed putting -
  1. It has a tendancy to prevent your left wrist (for a right-handed golfer) from breaking down or hinging through impact.
  2. With a cross-handed putting grip, your shoulders will be more level at address and impact.
  3. Your putter will stay lower to the ground on the forward swing and follow-through which will lead to more consistent contact.
  4. You will have the feeling that your left hand and arm are controlling the putting stroke.

How to structure your lessons

I am a new golfer and I am taking lessons at my club. Most golf lessons are done on the range and I do not feel like I am learning all parts of the game. I struggle around and on the greens but we do not seem to work on that in my lessons. Any suggestions for me?

First of all realize that when you take a lesson, the professional is working for you. If you are taking a one hour lesson, let the professional know that you would like to split the hour in half. Take 30 minutes to work on your full swing and then 30 minutes to work on your putting or chipping. If you are taking thirty minute lessons, alternate each week.

As a new golfer, the professional should have started you out on the putting green and then gone to chipping, pitching, etc. If the profesional balks at any of these plans it could be time to find a new instructor. You should "interveiw" any professional before starting lessons with him or her.

Here are a couple of articles to help you as you learn the game:

How Can I Make More Putts

I am having trouble with my putting stroke and need to make more putts. From any distance, I keep missing putts on the left-side of the hole and I do not understand why. Please help as it is killing my scores and my buddies will not leave it alone.

Unfortunately, your buddies are not going to let it go because it is probably filling their pockets!!! So let's go to work and get you fixed.

First, we need to make sure your putting alignment is good. With putting, your alignment is determined by your shoulders. Make sure your shoulders are aligned parallel left to the target.

Second, stroke putts from three to ten feet with only you rright hand on the club and your left hand in your pocket or on your hip. Make sure you hold your finish for a count of three.

After spending a short amount of time with these two ideas you will make more putts and starting collecting from your buddies!

Distance When I Putt

I am having trouble with my putting. My question is about the putting stance. How do you know how far away you should stand away from the ball while you are putting?

Good question. I will give you two different ways to set up to make more putts and go about finding the correct distance to stand away from the ball while putting.
  1. The quick answer is as you address the ball, make sure your hands are under your chin.
  2. Spend a few minutes in front of a full length mirror. Montior the distance of toe-line to ball distance so that your eyes are over the golf ball and is comfortable for you.

Now that you are set up to make more putts do not forget to track your way to better putting.

How To Improve My Putting?

I want to improve my putting however, I am confused with all of the different putting aids and putting books that are available. What should I use?

Like many weight-loss diets, many people think a golf training aid or a golf instruction book are too good to be true. Many of the ads for golf training aids come along with hefty claims such as being able to knock ten strokes off of your game or by cutting you handicap in half. You have learned that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. So which golf training aids or golf instruction books will help you improve your game? Below is a putting aid and a golf book that you can use in unison to improve your putting indoors or out.

1. The Putting Arc Deluxe
Your putting stroke will improve because this golf training aid is based upon natural body movement. This body movement can be quickly learned and repeated. With regular use, the results can be seen in a short period of time. The putter head travels in a perfect circle (radius R). The projection of this circle on the ground is an ellipse in the shape of Putting Arc Deluxe. The putter is always on plane and the intersection of this plane with the ground is a straight line, the ball/target line. With the Putting Arc Deluxe, the club face is always square to the above plane. In addition, it is only square to the ball target line at the center line of the Putting Arc. You are learning an inside to square to inside putting stroke. In this perfect putting stroke, there is only one moving part. The hands, arms and shoulders rotate as one unit and no manipulation of the hands or arms are required to follow the correct path with a correct clubface.

2. The Art of Putting by Stan Utley
In The Art of Putting, Stan Utley’s golf book outlines his putting fundamentals for players of all levels, from beginners to very skilled. Stan Utley’s easy to understand method will allow you to develop a repeatable stroke. Utley introduces you to the fundamentals of the proper grip, posture, alignment, and stroke. The Art of Putting will give you guidelines for finding the correct putter for you and the type of stroke you have. In addition, how a putt should sound and how to read greens properly. No matter what your current skill level is, Stan Utley keeps his theories easy to read and to implement for all players from beginners to skilled players in The Art of Putting. Everyone can enjoy this easy read instruction book.

Putting Drill With One Hand

I have lost my sense of feel on the greens. I can not judge the distance of any putt. I am usually short of the hole and if the ball gets past the hole it seems to keep going forever. Do you have a drill that can help me?

Of course! This is an easy putting drill and it will not take long to see a change in your distance control. Start just two feet away from the hole and take your setup. Before you stroke your putt remove your left hand and put it on your left hip or in your left pocket. Now stroke the putt with your right hand only. Yes hit a putt with one hand! Do this until you have holed five in a row and then move away from the hole to four feet and etc.

This drill will improve yor stroke by making the putter swing open on the backswing, return to square at impact and then close on the follow through.

Let us know how it goes!!!

How Can I Check That I Am Properly Holding My Finish When I Putt?

My friends tell me that I do not hold my finish with my putting stroke. Why is this a big deal and how do I fix it?

This is a very common problem that you will even see on Sunday on the PGA Tour from time to time. Not holding the finish with your putting stroke is a big deal because you are typically not hitting a solid putt. This means that your putting distance control is probably an issue for you. Here are the steps to fix it and start holing more putts:

  1. Pick a flat putt from only two feet from the putting cup. It is important to be this close to the hole so you can watch the ball go into the hole over and over again.

  2. Take a putting stroke and insure that your hands and putter shaft finish past your pants seam on your left leg for a right-handed golfer. In order to do this, you MUST keep an angle in your right wrist until you have completed the putting stroke.

  3. Once you have finished your putting stroke, hold your finish as you slowly count one, two, three. This will give you time to evaluate where your finish position is. Watch any tour and count as the pros finish their putting stroke.

How Do I Hold My Finish When I Putt?

My friends tell me that I do not hold my finish when I putt. How can I fix this?

This is a common problem which does not take to long to fix. Here are the steps to take:

  1. Pick a straight two foot putt on the practice putting green
  2. Begin making putts from this position.
  3. After you make your putting stroke and are in your putting finish position, count to three very slowly.
  4. If you are a right-handed putter, your putter shaft should be past your left leg and you right wrist should be bent.
  5. In order to do this, the tension in your arms must be close to nil or nothing at all.
